RE: slide-out tip-over risk?
Were full size people. And, I have wondered at times about the thing tipping on its side. We often have company in our trailer. The couch holds 3-4 adults, the dinette holds 4 adults. All of this is in the slide out. So, if you have 8 adults at 200+lbs each.... that's 1600 to 1800 lbs. ALL setting in the slide out. So far never tipping, squeaking, or bending of metal underneath.
But..... could it happen??? Everyone says that the slide out jack stands are a bad thing! So I guess we'll just have to wait & see.
Wish I would have taken physics!
We just picked up a fifth wheel. Our travel trailer had an itty bitty slide (couch) and that didn't need anything to keep it from tipping over.
My question ~ If we have the large couch/table slide is it better to get slide jacks or, as stated above, are they a bad thing to have. Our typical fifth wheel front bedroom has a King Size bed with a small slide, since it only slides out the same amount as our couch did I can't see a reason to put any type of slide jack on there, but is it recommended to put the tri-pod jacks in the front king pin area. When snowbirding, I have seen some with the tri-pod and others without. Aren't the 2 front stabilizer jacks enough to hold the front end up from tipping?
RE: More expensive, why?
To tell the truth, I really think it is more of a supply and demand. The majority of seniors/snowbirds want a fifth wheel rather a travel trailer. More people want something, the higher you can price it. In fact, we just sold a absolutely perfect travel trailer to pick up a not taken care of fifth wheel (goofy yes) But when we towed it home from New York to Michigan yesterday I couldn't believe the difference. Even though we used the Equal-i-zer hitch with our travel trailer you still got that little push over from trucks as you passed or they passed you. I didn't feel anything towing the fifth wheel. I had heard great things about fifth wheels but wow I now know the difference in pulling. As far as room, the fifth wheels seem to have MORE slides and MORE storage in their garage under the bedroom. I don't see any difference myself in the overall build, but I am not an engineer. I still think it boils down to the simple premise of supply and demand.
RE: Need a new rubber roof ~ Looking for quality workmanship
nny ~~ Unfortunately, I do not know Eric's last name otherwise I would hunt him down and pay him on the side, knowing I would get a fantastic job.
Mi Director & Compusew ~ Thank you for giving me a couple of places to check out. I had no idea of where to go and as I stated earlier there are a lot of dealerships out there that do pretty bad work. Ours is a 32' Coachman fifth wheel but it has a lot of stuff up there (t.v. antenna, internet in motion, air conditioner, satellite dish, etc.) do they take those things off or just go around them and caulk them?
Compusew ~ I know you have an additional 10' on me but could you tell me what a job like yours ran?
MI Director ~ Approx how much have you and your friends been charged for a new roof?
I just want to know what price range I am talking $1,500, $2,500 or is something like that might be closer to $4,000 range? I have absolutely no idea what a new roof runs.
Thanks all for your helpful answers
Need a new rubber roof ~ Looking for quality workmanship
Does anyone know of a place that handles roof repair and actually does a really good job? I figure if I am going to pay big bucks I would like someone who actually cares about workmanship. We live in Michigan and just picked up a used 5th wheel that was badly abused. Got a good price so we can put some money into fixing it. Since we actually took care of our last travel trailer we never needed any major repair work done. I don't mind paying a little more to get a good job. I just don't know who is good and who stinks at their job. We would have called on Eric at Adena Ridge in Ohio but apparently they went belly up. This economy is seeing a lot of small, yet good businesses die. Anyway, anyone that can suggest a place within a 100 miles that does good repair work, would help us greatly.
I would also like to know if you have had a bad roof repair and where it was done ~~ that way I Will Not End Up Going There!
Thanks,
Mary Ann
By the way, we live in Waterford, Michigan
The fifth wheel we bought is a 2006 Coachman Chaparral, but I would think any good r.v. dealer could put a roof on any brand fifth wheel.
DID ADENA RIDGE GO BELLY UP ~~ WHERE ARE YOU ERIC ! ! !
If anyone knows how to get in touch with Eric from Adena Ridge RV in Ohio please let me know. I would like to talk with him.
Eric if you see this please please contact Philip and Mary Ann Petty, our number is listed in Waterford (you know the state).
Thanks!
RE: Campground near Mackinac / Tahquamenon Falls
We are also looking into a couple other options. Possibly taking the Agawa Canyon Train and staying in a campground around Sault St. Marie for a little while. So any great campgrounds or ideas will be welcome. Thanks again for your input.
Campground near Mackinac / Tahquamenon Falls
Celebrating our 35th Anniversary and thought it might be nice to go to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and spend some time around Mackinac Island and Tahquamenon Falls. Live in Michigan but haven't been to the U P in quite some time. We are used to camping in anything from State Forests (no hook-ups) to places that have full hook-ups. The one thing I do prefer is large campsites (don't like what I consider parking lot camping ~ on top of each other) Can anyone lead me to a nice campground with lots of trees and large sites? Has anyone ever camped at Tahquamenon Falls State Park? Thanks for your input!
P.S.
Clean bathrooms or outhouses is another preference.
